Haskap

A small, deep purple fruit from the north. Haskap is a cold-climate berry native to Siberia that grows wild in areas such as the Yubari Plain in Hokkaido. The name is derived from the Ainu word 'Haskapu,' which is said to mean 'that which grows in abundance on branches.' It is characterized by its unique sweet and sour taste and a flavor similar to blueberries. It is highly nutritious, and because harvesting is done by hand during a very short period in summer, it is known as a rare fruit. It is transformed into various forms such as jams, juices, liqueurs, and sweets, and is also famous as an ingredient in the well-known Tomakomai confection 'Yoitomake.' The area around Bibai is one of its cultivation sites. It offers a precious taste that can only be encountered in Hokkaido.
