Glutinous Rice
In truth, Nayoro is a 'hidden gem' known to those in the know as the home of glutinous rice. Nayoro City boasts the largest area of glutinous rice cultivation in Japan, and an incredible one-third of all glutinous rice produced in Hokkaido is born in this city. It is surprising to note that glutinous rice accounts for approximately 90% of the paddy fields. The climate of the basin, characterized by large temperature fluctuations, combined with the pure water brought by the Teshio River, produces high-quality glutinous rice that is soft and highly adhesive. Its quality is guaranteed, so much so that it is even used in the famous 'Akafuku' specialty from Ise. There is an abundance of processed goods that fully utilize the deliciousness of glutinous rice, such as mochi, okowa (mixed rice), daifuku, and amazake. Please come and taste the chewy texture nurtured by Japan's number one rice-producing region.
