Muroran Yakitori

Despite being called 'yakitori,' this is a specialty of Muroran that uses pork instead of chicken. Muroran yakitori is a unique food culture where pieces of pork and onion are skewered alternately and grilled, then eaten with Western-style mustard. Its origins are said to date back to the early Showa era, when pig farming was encouraged nationwide for increased food production and military needs, leading street stalls in Muroran to frequently handle pork offal and meat. A distinctive feature is the use of inexpensive, readily available Hokkaido onions instead of green onions. The combination of the sweet sauce and the sharp kick of the mustard has long sustained the appetites of workers in this 'Steel City.' When you bite into the alternating layers of pork and onion, the savory richness of the fat and the sweetness of the onion spread through your mouth. With numerous shops crowded throughout the city, it is a proud, local flavor enjoyed by the people of Muroran.
