Eskalop

A local gourmet dish from Nemuro with a mysterious name. Eskalop is a Western-style dish created in Nemuro around 1963. It is a single-plate meal featuring crispy tonkatsu placed atop butter rice, generously smothered in rich demi-glace sauce. Its origin is said to be the creation and naming of a chef who traveled from Yokohama to Nemuro at a local Western-style restaurant; it later spread as a Nemuro specialty through the shops of his former disciples. Being highly voluminous, this dish has served as a source of energy for fishermen working at sea. The flavor, where fragrant butter rice, crispy tonkatsu, and rich demi-glace sauce blend into one, is unforgettable once tasted. It is a must-try specialty when visiting Nemuro.
