Kanimeshi (Crab Rice)
This dish has been loved as a representative ekiben (station bento) of Hokkaido. The roots of Kanimeshi lie in the station bento of Oshamambe. It began when boiled crab was sold at Oshamambe Station, which flourished as a key railway hub, during the food shortages following the war. Because they could only offer hairy crab during its summer season, many prototypes were created with the goal of making it available year-round, leading to the completion of 'Kanimeshi' in 1950. With seasoned rice infused with the savory flavor of crab, it is a leading representative of Hokkaido's station bentos, alongside Mori's Ika-meshi (squid stuffed with rice). Each bite, generously topped with shredded crab meat, spreads a soft aroma of the sea. You can enjoy this unique taste characteristic of port towns in various places including Abashiri, making it the perfect companion for your travels.
