Yakitori Bento
Despite being called 'yakitori,' this is a unique bento characteristic of Hakodate because it uses pork instead of chicken. The Hasegawa Store Yakitori Bento was born in 1978. It all started when a customer asked, "Don't you have any bento?" In response, the shop quickly combined their store-made rice with skewers of grilled pork. In the Donan (southern Hokkaido) region, it is common for 'yakitori' to refer to pork, as pig farming was prosperous and pork was easily accessible. Additionally, pork was a preferred choice for workers in cold climates because it provides stamina. The style involves grilling the meat after an order is placed, and a highlight is being able to choose your seasoning, such as sauce or salt. It is a must-try specialty that you can pick up at a convenience store when visiting Hakodate.
