Ikamameshi

This dish features small squids tightly packed with a mixture of glutinous and non-glutinous rice, then slowly cooked in a sweet and savory soy sauce glaze. When you cut into it, the glossy grains of rice spill out, releasing the fragrant aroma of the squid that has absorbed all the flavorful broth. The combination of chewy rice and tender, simmered squid creates a satisfying experience, as if enjoying both rice and a side dish in a single bite. The sweet and salty sauce and the scent of the sea spread through your mouth with every chew. Originating in Mori Town, Hokkaido, this is a famous ekiben from Mori Station on the Hakodate Main Line. This flavor, continuously crafted by 'Abe Shoten' in Mori Town, is a nationwide favorite that has long competed for the top spot in Keio Department Store's Ekiben Competitions. Its ability to remain delicious even when cold is another delightful feature.
