Robatayaki
The sound of seafood and seasonal vegetables sizzling over charcoal. Lured by the savory aroma, you are handed freshly grilled items using a long wooden spatula—it is a dining style that allows you to savor the warmth of the moment. The origins of Robatayaki are said to trace back to 'Robata,' opened by Tomiya Amae in Sendai in 1950. His second disciple opened a shop of the same name in Kushiro in 1953, serving freshly caught seafood from Kushiro Port. It is believed that this method, which applied the Sendai style of grilling vegetables to seafood, spread to various regions. Today, it has become a signature food culture of Kushiro. Enjoy the bounty of the sea from the port town of Kushiro, along with the warmth of the charcoal fire.
