Otaru Sushi
As you bring a piece to your mouth, the sweet freshness of the sea gently spreads. The plump texture and juiciness unique to a port town—this is Otaru sushi. Otaru was once a prosperous port town known for its herring fishing. It is said that as the fresh seafood landed at the market gained fame, young artisans who had trained in various regions flocked here to open their own shops. This accumulation of talent built the brand of 'Otaru, the City of Sushi.' At its peak, it is said there were nearly 200 sushi restaurants in the city, and through the efforts of these craftsmen, 'Otaru Sushi-ya Dori' was born. Even today, many renowned shops line the street, welcoming tourists. It is a source of pride for Otaru, where long history lives on.
