Half-Fried Chicken
The skin is crispy, and the inside is bursting with juicy meat. This dish, where a whole chicken half is fried grandly, is incredibly satisfying just by its appearance. The simple seasoning of salt and pepper actually enhances the savory flavor of the chicken. It was created by 'Naruto' in Otarulated. The shop was founded in 1957 by Torao and Tamiko Kurishima, who moved from Awaji Island. Initially, they were selling it steamed on an iron plate, but it wasn't successful; they decided to try deep-frying it instead, which became a huge hit—it is said that this famous dish was born almost out of desperation. Today, many shops of the same style line the streets of Otaru. It is a soul food for the people of Otaru that has been loved for nearly 70 years.
