Hasegawa Store Yakitori Bento
After ordering, the skewers are grilled over a flame, adding fragrant smoke to the bento box. The skewers, coated in a glossy sauce, are placed prominently atop rice lined with seaweed. Interestingly, this "yakitori" uses pork rather than chicken. In southern Hokkaido, if it's skewered and grilled, even pork is called "yakitori." The sweet and savory sauce soaks into the fatty pork and seaweed rice, making it impossible to stop eating. The tenderness of the pork is complemented by the aromatic flavor of the green onions sandwiched between the meat. A local way to enjoy it is to press the skewer down with the lid and slide it out smoothly. The flavors come in five varieties: sauce, salt, salt-sauce, spicy, and miso sauce. It is a freshly made, warm soul food that Hakodate locals have loved for many years.
