Shiratamaya Shinzaburo Gunbai Monaka

The light, crispy monaka wafer delivers a unique and fragrant experience. This is the signature confection of 'Shiratamaya Shinzaburo,' a prestigious shop with over 380 years of history, founded in 1638. Located in Yatsushiro, an area blessed with abundant water and high-quality rice, this long-established shop has perfected the art of making shiratama (glutinous rice) powder. By utilizing this specialty powder, the baked monaka wafers are lighter and more aromatic than standard ones. One of the joys is filling the wafer yourself with smooth, golden-colored sweet potato paste just before eating. Shaped like a 'gunbai' (a war fan used by Sengoku period commanders for signaling), it serves as a lucky charm representing victory or being guided in a good direction. It is an auspicious item that is also highly appreciated as a gift.
