Kashisho-dokoro Konomi Matsukaze
A crispy, light texture paired with the fragrant aroma of poppy seeds and an elegant sweetness. Every time a thin piece enters your mouth, a refined aftertaste quietly spreads. Matsukaze is a traditional confection made by thinly baking a batter containing eggs and sugar, then sprinkling poppy seeds on top. It is said to be named after the phrase 'the lonely sound of Matsukaze on the shore,' because while the surface is fragrant, the underside is stark white and lonely. Legend has it that it was brought from Kyoto during the Nanboku-cho period and has been refined over many years to become a famous confection of Kikuchi. Haraguchi Seika in Kikuchi City continues to protect the production of Matsukaze, which is also known as 'Japan's thinnest Japanese confectionery,' measuring only about 1.5mm thick. A thin baked sweet from Kikuchi that conveys the elegance of Kyoto even today. A delicate treat that is perfect with tea.
