Kumamoto Confectionery: Otemoyan
When you break open the chewy dough, a creamy milk custard flows out. Combined with sweet bean paste, it is a manju where Japanese and Western flavors gently meld together. Otemoyan is a long-seller from Fukudaya, named after the Kumamoto folk song 'Otemoyan.' It features a chewy dough made from Kumamoto-grown rice flour, carefully wrapping sweet bean paste and milk custard. It is said that the name carries the wish to create a taste so delicious it makes your cheeks turn red, much like the character in the folk song. It won the gold award in the 'Higo Mokkosu no Umakamon' (Kumamoto's Delicious Foods) prefectural popularity contest. A Japanese-Western confectionery characteristic of Kumamoto, bearing the name of a folk song. A gentle flavor that brings a smile to your face with every bite.
