Koun-do Koin Monaka
An adorable monaka shaped like ancient seals (koin). When you pick it up and take a bite, the fragrant wafer cracks crispily, revealing a generous filling of smooth bean paste that melts in your mouth. The sweetness is not overpowering, and the moist bean paste blends perfectly with the toasted aroma of the wafer, creating a flavor that makes you crave a cup of tea. The Koin Monaka is crafted by Koun-do Honten, which has been established for over a hundred years in Ashikaga. Its name comes from its shape, modeled after ancient seals passed down through Ashikaga School (Japan's oldest school) and Banrai-ji Temple. The wrapping paper is also well-known to have been designed by Mitsuo Aida, who was born in Ashikaga.
