Kaitanzame (Charcoal Candy)
A black candy produced since 1932 by Ishikawa Shoten, a famous confectioner in Akabira City, Hokkaido. Inspired by the history of Akabira, which once bustled with coal mining, its unique color and shape mimic chunks of coal. It is made by hardening starch syrup mixed with natural cassia oil and breaking it into pieces like coal. The sweetness comes from Hokkaido's specialty beet sugar, featuring a gentle sweetness paired with a refreshing sting of cassia. You can enjoy a nostalgic flavor that conveys the memories of the mining town to the present day. Once in your mouth, the spreading aroma of cassia leaves a deeply nostalgic aftertaste. This long-selling candy continues to be loved in souvenir shops and stations throughout Hokkaido.
