Uroko Dango (Scale Dumplings)
Chewy dumplings topped with plenty of red bean paste or mitarashi sauce. With its simple deliciousness, this dango has long been loved as a representative confection of Fukagawa, Hokkaido. It was created by Takahashi Shoji, founded in 1902. It is said to have begun being sold at the bustling Fukagawa Station during the railway era, and was named 'Uroko Dango' (Scale Dumplings) after the scales of herring that arrived in freight cars. The story is quite charming: it was originally based on Tsubaki-mochi from the founder's hometown in Niigata, and received its current name due to a suggestion from the station master at the time. A comforting sweetness that has remained unchanged for over 100 years. If you visit Fukagawa, please be sure to taste a traditional stick.
