Shiriuchi Confectionery: Oppai Manju (Breast Manju)
A unique manju (steamed bun) known for its somewhat surprising appearance, made in the town of Shiriuchi, near Hakodate. This sweet was inspired by the legend of the 'Ubhasugi' (Wet Nurse Cedar) passed down in Shiriuchi Park. Legend has it that a mother struggling with milk production prayed to this ancient tree and her wish was granted; thus, the tree has long been revered as a deity of breastfeeding and easy childbirth. Following this legend, the sweet features white bean paste infused with condensed milk, crafted with a moist and gentle sweetness. Despite its attention-grabbing appearance, the white bean paste inside offers an authentic and robust flavor. It is a famous Shiriuchi confection that has been long loved locally alongside its accompanying legend.
