Rokkatei Poroshiri Pie

A savory pie delivered only in June by Rokkatei of Obihiro. The name is derived from Mount Poroshiri, the highest peak of the Hidaka Mountains, and comes from the Ainu words 'poro' (large) and 'shiri' (mountain). While you might expect a sweet treat, the filling consists of tepou beans and bacon stewed in tomato. The richness of the sweet and sour tomato sauce and the umami of the beans and bacon are encased in a crispy pie crust. It is a dish that offers a substantial, savory flavor different from typical desserts. It is rare, as it is sold only during the month of June. Warming it up enhances the fragrant aroma of the pie. It is a powerful yet approachable flavor that carries the name of the mountain.
