Hashiya Oranda Senbei
A local specialty born in Nemuro that has been beloved for a long time. Despite being called “senbei” (rice cracker), unlike typical crispy rice crackers, its most defining feature is its moist, elastic, and soft texture. You will be surprised the first time you taste it by its chewy consistency, which is so resilient it won't break even when bent. The name originates from the “Oranda Senbei” (Dutch Senbei) brought to Nagasaki and Hirado by foreign ships. It is said that fishermen enjoyed them as snacks on board, and the tradition took root in the port town of Nemuro. While several shops used to produce them, Hashiya Kashiten is now the only one preserving this flavor. With its simple sweetness and addictive texture, it is a taste that feels both nostalgic and new. You will find yourself reaching for one piece after another.
