Nagasaki Milkshake
When you scoop it with a spoon, it crumbles with a crisp texture. The gentle sweetness of egg and condensed milk melts coolly in your mouth. In Nagasaki, the milkshake is not something you drink, but something you 'eat.' It is said to have been created by the coffee shop 'Tsurucha,' founded in 1925. The story goes that it began as a way to help people endure the harsh Nagasaki summers by adding crushed ice to milkshakes, sometime between the late Taisho and early Showa eras. As it gained popularity, it spread to coffee shops all over the city and became a Nagasaki staple. Today, this former summer tradition can be enjoyed all year round. It is a cup that feels like a cool, sweet memory, scooped up with a spoon.
