Yuzu of Kitagawa Village

The village where the late Edo-period activist Shintaro Nakaoaka once lived has now become one of Japan's leading yuzu regions. Located in the mountains of eastern Kochi Prefecture, Kitagawa is a small village where forests cover 95% of its area. It is said that the cultivation began when Nakaoaka encouraged the farming of wild yuzu growing in the village to be used as a preservative and seasoning. Full-scale cultivation expanded around 1965, and today it has grown into a major production area spanning over 100 hectares. The temperature fluctuations in the mountains produce highly aromatic yuzu. With a wide variety of processed goods such as yuzu juice, yuzu ponzu, drinks, and marmalade, these products support the village's livelihood. We invite you to experience the refreshing aroma that has been nurtured for generations in the home of the activist Nakaoaka.
