Ono Soroban Senbei (Abacus Rice Crackers)
These are uniquely shaped baked rice crackers modeled after abacus beads. They are a playful souvenir exclusive to Ono, the town of the abacus. Ono is the production center of 'Banshu Soroban,' the top-ranked abacus in the country. Legend has it that the technique for making abacuses was brought back by people who fled to Otsu during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's siege of Miki Castle. At its peak, the town produced millions of units annually, and the craft was designated as a National Traditional Craft. These crackers allow you to enjoy that local industry through their shape. With a light, crispy texture and a simple sweetness, this is a unique piece that Ono is proud of—fun to look at and delicious to eat.
