Kagoshi no Mochi (Kakogawa)

"Kagoshi no Mochi" is a historic rice cake tied to the roots of the Kakogawa place name. Its charm lies in its simple, gentle flavor, made solely from rice flour, sugar, and starch syrup. Legend has it that the name "Kagoshi" originates from a time long ago when Emperor Keiko visited this land and saw the terrain reflected on the river surface looking like deer spots (kanoko). The single line running across the top of the mochi is shaped to resemble a deer's back. A local confectionery shop founded in the Taisho era has carefully preserved this famous sweet, which previously won an award at the National Confectionery Expo. With a clean simplicity—unadorned by bean paste or roasted soybean flour—it is a dish that allows you to fully enjoy the inherent chewy sweetness of the mochi.
