Shiomanjū (Salted Steamed Bun)
A white, raku-gan style crust filled with bean paste seasoned with the salt of Ako. The sweetness and subtle saltiness resonate exquisitely in this famous confection of Banshu Ako. Ako has long been a producer of high-quality salt, and it is said that successive feudal lords, who enjoyed the tea ceremony, used steamed buns seasoned with salt as confectionery offerings to the Shogunate and Imperial families. According to the records of the original Harimaya, in 1nyen (1853), the head of the family, moved by the sunset sinking into the sea of Ako, created this confection using pure white salt, sugar, and kanbai-ko. It offers a deep flavor unique to a famous salt-producing region that is not merely sweet. With a lingering deliciousness that makes you reach for more, it is an elegant item that Ako is proud of.
