Sakura Shrimp
Enjoy these translucent, cherry-blossom pink shrimp as kakiage, kamaage (boiled), or sometimes even raw. When you take a bite, a gentle sweetness rises through the plump texture of the shell. Suruga Bay is the only place in Japan where Sakura shrimp fishing is permitted, and Yui is known as its central hub. Legend has it that the history began in 1894 (Meiji 27), when fishermen on an evening horse mackerel haul accidentally forgot to load the barrels used to float their nets; the resulting deeper net happened to catch a massive amount of shrimp. Fishing takes place only twice a year, in spring and autumn, as fishermen continue this tradition carefully to protect the resources. Known as the 'Jewel of Suruga Bay,' it is a seafood delicacy that can only be tasted here.
