Narita Yokan
A moist and lustrous slice. As it touches your palate, the fluffy flavor of chestnuts and an elegant sweetness gently melt away—Narita's Chestnut Yokan has been cherished as a souvenir for pilgrims. It was created by Nagomi no Yoneya, founded in Narita in 1899 (Meiji 32). Originally a rice shop in the temple town, the story begins when the founder, Chozaburo Morooka, took inspiration from 'Kuri-kan' (chestnut jelly), a sweet served in the Buddhist vegetarian cuisine of Naritasan Shinshoji Temple. He created and began selling the first chestnut yokan in Japan, incorporating locally grown shiba chestnuts. As a staple souvenir for temple visitors, this traditional taste continues to be passed down today. It is a treat to be savored slowly alongside a cup of tea.
