Daigo Oyaki

In the town of Daigo, famous for Fukuroda Falls, there is an oyaki with a nostalgic flavor. In Daigo, oyaki are also called 'Hodayaki.' The name originates from the practice of kneading miso into flour, shaping it into balls, and throwing them into the ashes of an irori (hearth/hodo) to bake. It has been a precious local food passed down among farming families since ancient times. Today, at the 'Daigo Oyaki School'—which utilizes a closed elementary school—oyaki filled with local vegetables or red bean paste are handmade one by one. With a chewy dough and a gentle, rustic flavor from the fillings, biting into a freshly baked, hot oyaki while sightseeing at places like Fukuroda Falls is a dish that warms your very heart.
