Kozuzu Monaka (Little Sparrow Monaka)
This is an adorable, bite-sized monaka inspired by the sparrows that live around Tosu Station. It is a signature product that Mizutaya, a long-established shop founded in 1889, has continued to create for many years. Legend has it that in the past, because they nested in station buildings blackened by the smoke of steam locomotives, the sparrows of Tosu were said to be black. This monaka began as an attempt to capture the image of such a sparrow puffing out its feathers to stay warm against the cold, filled with dark red bean paste. We carefully wrap delicious Tokachi red bean paste inside a fluffy, sparrow-shaped wafer. This is a lovely local flavor containing a heartwarming story characteristic of the railway town, Tosu. It is an adorable treat that you'll want to serve alongside a warm cup of tea.
