Ohara Shinise Shouro Manju

A famous confection of Karatsu, each piece is hand-baked individually on a copper plate. Ohara Shinise is an established shop founded in 1850 (Kaei 3). This Shouro Manju earned its name because it resembles the round shape of 'shouro' (truffle), a mushroom that grows in the sand at the base of pine trees in Karatsu's scenic Niji-no-Matsubara forest. It is also said to have been named when it was presented to the feudal lord. Inside the thin castella sponge, smooth red bean paste made from Hokkaido adzuki beans is elegantly wrapped. The skin, baked one by one on a copper plate, is fragrant and harmonizes exquisitely with the smooth sweetness of the bean paste. Its round, cute appearance makes it perfect as an accompaniment to tea. It is a traditional Japanese sweet representing Karatsu, loved for over 170 years.
