Akafuku Mochi

Akafuku Mochi is the synonym for Ise, with a shop that has stood in the town fronting the Naiku of Ise Jingu for over 300 years. It is one of the most venerable establishments, with legends stating it was already operating by the banks of the Isuzu River in 1707 (Hoei 4). The three lines of bean paste represent the murmuring of the Isuzu River, while the white mochi inside represents the pebbles resting on the riverbed. The name 'Akafuku' is said to derive from the phrase 'Sekishin Keifuku,' which means to rejoice in one's own and others' happiness with an innocent, baby-like sincerity. It is said that this name originated from the words of a tea master who came from Kyoto. With smooth smooth bean paste and soft mochi, it is a representative confection of Ise that you must taste at the conclusion of your pilgrimage to Ise.

  • Akafuku Mochi

At the main store of Akafuku, artisans known as 'Mochi-ire-san' hand-apply three distinct lines of bean paste to each piece after more than three years of training. The shape, which has remained unchanged for over 300 years, is an expression of the flow of the Isuzu River and the pebbles on its riverbed. There is even a theory that it was originally salty; it remains a symbol of Mie, continuing to welcome pilgrims on their journeys to Ise across the ages.

  • Reprinted Akafuku Mochi

A reproduction of the 'Shiromochi and Kuromochi' released by Akafuku in 2021. The Kuromochi is a revival of the Edo to Meiji era style Akafuku mochi made with brown sugar bean paste, while the Shiromochi features the pure sweetness of white adzuki beans. This legendary flavor, which sold out every day when it was available as a limited edition at the 2017 Ise Confectionery Expo, has now become a regular product.
