Onoya Tokonatsu

Beneath a coating of white sugar, soft gyuhi (sweet rice cake) peeks through. Upon entering your mouth, the Wasanbon sugar melts instantly, followed by the spreading aroma of chewy gyuhi and the elegant scent of the white adzuki bean paste inside. It is crafted by Onoya, an established shop in Takaoka's Yamamachi district that has existed since 1838. This is a lovely, bite-sized mochi confection made by wrapping rare Bitchu white adzuki bean paste in gyuhi and coating it with Wasanbon sugar. The name is inspired by a poem written by the poet Otomo no Yakamochi about Mount Tateyama. Since the Meiji era, it has been passed down as the shop's signature confection. Melting sugar, soft gyuhi, and the aroma of white adzuki beans. It is an elegant single morsel where all three elements harmonize.
