Oranda Senbei (Dutch Rice Crackers)

A thin rice cracker that melts in your mouth with a light, crisp sound. The dough, only about 3mm thick, features the gentle sweetness of Shonai rice and a moderate saltiness, making it impossible to stop at just one. Born in 1962 from Sakata Beika, this is the original thin-baked rice cracker made from 100% non-glutinous rice grown in the Shonai Plain. The name originates from 'Orada,' which means 'us' in the Shonai dialect. It is said that a playful pronunciation of 'Orada no Senbei' (Our Rice Crackers) became 'Oranda Senbei' (Dutch Rice Crackers), giving it a charming origin. The light saltiness makes it perfect for both snacks and as an accompaniment to tea. It is a soulful snack of Shonai that continues to be loved across generations.
