Tokara Cattle of Toshima Village
On Kuchinoerabu Island, located at the northern edge of the Tokara Islands, lives a rare type of wild cattle found in Japan: the native 'Tokara Cattle (Kuchinoerabu Cattle).' They are a rare existence known as pure Japanese native cattle with no Western breeding. It is said that a few heads brought to the island during the Taisho era became wild amidst the rugged terrain. They are small Wagyu weighing about 300 to 400 kilograms, and were designated as a national natural monument in 1928. Their presence, living naturally within the primeval forests, is truly a treasure of the island. Their noble yet rustic appearance leaves an impression on all who visit. Please reflect on these precious native cattle nurtured by the great nature of the Tokara Islands.
