Matsubara Okoshi
Crunch, crisp. With a light texture, the fragrant flavor of rice and a gentle sweetness spread through your mouth. Matsubara Okoshi is a simple, addictive Saga okoshi sweet. It is a traditional taste made by hardening steamed and dried rice with boiled malt syrup. Named after the famous Niji-no-Matsubara (Rainbow Pine Grove) in Karatsu, it has been produced continuously since the Meiji era. The dark color of the brown sugar represents the black pines of the Matsubara, the cylindrical shape represents the pine trunks, and the way they are stacked in squares is said to represent Mount Kagami rising in the background. This simple sweetness, unique to the rice-producing region of Saga, is perfect with tea. Please enjoy this old-fashioned taste while taking a relaxing break.
