Handa Somen

Handa Somen is a specialty of the Handa district in Tsurugi Town. This traditional noodle boasts a history of about 200 years, featuring noodles that are thicker than typical somen with a characteristic chewy and firm texture. It is said to have originated during the Edo period when boatmen involved in the river transport of the Yoshino River brought back production methods from Miwa, Nara. Under JAS standards, which classify noodles by thickness, it would originally be classified as 'hiyamugi,' but due to its long tradition and regional identity, it is specially permitted to be labeled as 'somen.' With a smooth texture that glides down the throat and a satisfying bite, this is a proud noodle of Tsurugi Town that is delicious both chilled and warm. The satisfying fullness unique to these thicker noodles is unforgettable once you have tasted them.
