Konko Manju
In the temple town of Konkokyo, there is a simple manju that has been passed down since the Meiji era: Konko Manju. In Konko-cho, Asakuji City, where the headquarters of Konkokyo is located, this famous confection has been cherished as a souvenir for worshippers. Its origins are said to date back to around 1893, when a local confectionery shop began selling them under the name 'Kibi Manju.' It features a sponge-like dough made from flour, eggs, sugar, and honey, baked with a smooth sweet bean paste filling inside. Its soft, gentle sweetness has been loved across generations. Local shops such as Ogawaya and Bitchudo continue to preserve these handmade flavors. It is a nostalgic taste of the temple town that you'll want to pick up on your way home from visiting the shrine.
