Sesshu Monaka

There is an adorable-looking monaka named Sesshu Monaka, named after the painter Sesshu, who was born in Soja. Sesshu was a master of ink wash painting active during the Muromachi period, and his birthplace is present-day Soja City. An anecdote remains from his childhood training at Hoafuku-ji Temple in the city: while he spent all his time painting instead of meditating and was tied to a pillar as punishment, he used his spilled tears to paint a mouse on his toe, surprising the monk. That mouse serves as the motif for this monaka. Established in the early Meiji era, Hirakawa Sesshu-an finishes this treat by wrapping carefully cooked Hokkaido red bean paste inside fragrant monaka wafers. This is a product where the harmony of elegant bean paste and wafer overlaps with the history and stories of Soja. It is something you will want to savor slowly along with some tea.
