Horseshoe Crab Monaka

This monaka looks so much like a real horseshoe crab that you might do a double-take. When flipped over, you can see an exquisite design molded down to every single leg; once you crack the crisp, fragrant wafer, a rich, sweet bean paste is revealed. It is a famous confection from Kasaoka City, Okayama Prefecture, produced by makers such as Seigetsudo. Kasaoka is known as a breeding ground for horseshoe crabs, and the city even hosts the Kasaoka City Horseshoe Crab Museum. We have humorously captured the town's symbol inside a fragrant monaka shell. Despite its striking appearance, it offers a gentle, traditional Japanese sweet flavor once tasted. Why not pick some up as a souvenir from Kasaoka—it's sure to be a great conversation starter?
