Chushingura (Akō Local Sake)
In Akō, the setting of the Chūshingura legend, this is a historic cup brewed by the town's only remaining brewery. Known as the local sake of Akō, 'Chūshingura' is brewed by Okutō Shōji, founded in 1601 (Keichō 6). As a prestigious brewery that served as the official sake for the Akō Clan during the Edo period, it continues to carefully preserve the sole tradition of sake brewing in Akō City. Brewed slowly using high-quality water and rice from Harima, this sake is not merely a light dry style, but is characterized by its full-bodied, rich, and savory umami profile. It is a robust local sake nurtured in the very land associated with the Chūshingura story, designed to complement the seafood of the Akō sea. It pairs exceptionally well with dishes using Akō salt and Seto Inland Sea oysters. At the museum attached to the brewery, you can also view traditional sake-brewing tools from the past. It is a flavor that makes you want to slowly savor a cup while reflecting on the tale of the loyal retainers.
