Matsunaga (Itami Matsunaga Sake Brewery)

This is the 'Gomen-shu,' officially authorized by the Edo Shogunate and served at the Shogun's table. Produced by Itami Matsunaga Sake Brewery, 'Matsunaga' comes from a brewery in Itami founded in the first year of the Genroku era (1688). During the Edo period, sake from Itami was granted a special status as 'Gomen-shu' authorized by the Shogunate, and among them, Matsunaga was the pinnacle, selected as an offering to the Imperial Court and as sake for the Shogun's meals. In the sake rankings of that time, it boasted a prestige comparable to the 'Ozeki' rank in both Eastern and Western Japan. Even today, the characters for 'Gomen-shu' written in vermilion on the label quietly tell the story of its proud history. It is an illustrious brand that continues to pass down the traditions of Itami sake brewing. Its clean yet deep flavor remains as vibrant as ever, even across the long passage of time. This is a bottle that is sure to delight anyone who loves history.
