Sugihara Paper
In Taka Town, there is a tradition of handmade Washi paper that has been passed down for 1300 years. The name Sugihara paper is so ancient that it appears in the diaries of Fujiwara no Tadazane from the Heian period, and its roots can be traced back to the 'Harima-gami' of the Nara period. In the Middle Ages, it spread throughout the country as official paper for the Kamakura Shogunate and was used by samurai for gifts. Although the production almost ceased at one point, the manufacturing method was revived with the establishment of the Sugihata Paper Institute in 1972, and it has since been designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of Hyogo Prefecture and a Traditional Craft. Its natural whiteness and warm texture are something that machines simply cannot replicate. Please come to this village where you can even try papermaking yourself, and experience a thousand years of craftsmanship.
