Yashiro no Momo (Yashiro Peaches)
In the Yashiro district of Kato City, there exists a 'phantom peach' that does not circulate in regular markets. Cultivation began around 1985 when residents of the Kamikume district in the former Yashiro Town cleared the mountains and planted about 2,500 peach trees across approximately 6 hectares. However, because these peaches do not go to wholesale markets—as producers sell out entirely through direct sales alone—they came to be known as 'phantom peaches.' They appear at roadside tent stalls along the prefectural road starting in July and are a hidden gem that sells out in just about one month. To get your hands on these sweet and juicy white peaches, the best way is to visit during their peak season. The melt-in-your-mouth sweetness of the flesh is exceptional; it is a summer delicacy that makes you feel lucky if you manage to encounter it.
