Miki Metalwork

When you hold a knife up to the light, its edge is so clear it feels as if you could be drawn into it. Known as the 'Town of Metalwork,' Miki City has produced tools imbued with artisanal skill, such as knives, planes, and chisels. Since ancient times, the Harima region has been a land deeply connected to the gods of blacksmithing. Following the Battle of Miki in the late 16th century, carpenters gathered from various regions for reconstruction, driving up the demand for carpentry tools and leading to the city's great development as a metalworking hub. Five items—including saws, chisels, and planes—have been designated as the national traditional craft 'Banshu Miki Uchi-hamono' (Banshu Miki forged blades). With a smoothness of cut so profound it is said that 'the material itself breathes,' people from all over the country still visit Miki today in search of tools that will last a lifetime.
