Ono Abacus (Ono no Soroban)

When you flick the beads with your fingertips, a pleasant clicking sound resonates. Ono City is the birthplace of Banshu Abacus. It is no exaggeration to say that almost all materials used to make abacuses in Japan originate from this land. The history of abacus making began during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. It is said that people who fled to Otsu during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's siege of Miki Castle learned the methods of abacus production and returned home, beginning to manufacture them around Miki and Ono. In 1976, it was designated as a national traditional craft. The smooth movement of the beads, each one carved and assembled by artisans, goes beyond being just a tool for calculation; it is a living embodiment of the beauty of craftsmanship and the pride of Ono City.
