Awaji Island Onion
When you take a bite of a raw slice, a crisp texture is followed by an explosion of juicy sweetness. They have very little pungency, making them so mild that they are unlikely to make you cry even in a salad. When cooked, they melt into a tender consistency, further enhancing their sweetness—Awaji Island onions are versatile stars whether eaten raw or heated. The warm climate and abundant sunlight of Awaji Island, combined with mineral-rich, well-drained soil, help suppress pungency. They are carefully cultivated over a longer period of about seven months, and after harvest, they are hung in traditional onion sheds to accumulate sweetness. Their sugar content is said to reach approximately 10%. A pride of the island, these onions are sweet and tender. Whether made into soup or roasted whole, you will be amazed by their sweetness.
