Banshu Orimono

Banshu Orimono is a type of cotton fabric that has been woven for over 200 years, primarily in Nishiwaki City, Hyogo Prefecture. Its origins date back to Kansei 4 (1792) in the mid-Edo period. It is said to have begun when Yasubee Hida, a temple carpenter, brought weaving techniques back from Nishijin, Kyoto. The craft spread as a side job for farmers in an area blessed with essential water resources for dyeing, such as the Kako and Sugihara Rivers. Its most prominent feature is 'yarn-dyeing,' where the threads are dyed before the patterns are woven. It is known as a major production center responsible for much of the yarn-dyed woven fabric in Japan. With its natural texture, rich colors, and gentle touch, Banshu Orimono—transformed into shirts and stoles—becomes a piece that softly accompanies your daily life.
