Tanba Chestnut

Large enough to feel heavy in the palm of your hand—those are Tanba chestnuts. Cultivated in Tanba-Sasayama, these chestnuts are known nationwide for their impressive size, beautiful luster, and elegant sweetness. Their history is ancient; as early as the Heian period, the name 'Tanba' was recorded as a source of chestnuts presented to the Imperial Court, and Edo-period literature also praised their size and quality. Because they contain higher levels of glucose and sucrose than ordinary chestnuts, they release a rich sweetness just by steaming or boiling them. When you bite into the fluffy flesh, a deep chestnut aroma fills your mouth. Whether prepared as shibukawani (chestnuts simmered with their skins) or chestnut rice, the sweetness is exceptional. Every autumn, many people visit Tanba-Sasayama in search of these large, premium chestnuts.
