Iiyama Buddhist Altars

A solemn presence, with gold leaf shimmering against black lacquer. Iiyama Buddhist altars are a traditional craft boasting approximately 330 years of history. Iiyama has long been a land of deep Buddhist faith, where the climate suitable for lacquer coating and heavy snowfall nurtured the development of altar making as a cottage industry. It is said that the production of unadorned altars began around the second year of the Genroku era (1689), and in 1975, it was designated as a national Traditional Craft. The exquisite craftsmanship continues to this day, with specialized artisans dividing the labor for processes such as wood preparation, shrine construction, carving, and gold leaf application. Iiyama is a 'town of Buddhist altars,' where the winters of this snow country beautifully nurture the lacquer. The inherited skills of master artisans live on here.
