Zenko-ji Monzen Soba

As you slurp the noodles, the aroma of the buckwheat drifts through your nose. A freshly made and freshly boiled bowl provides a delicious flavor that soothes the body after a temple visit. The temple town in front of Zenko-ji is known as a prominent area for soba, alongside places like Eiheiji in Fukui and Jindai-ji in Tokyo. It is said that tea houses developed to provide rest for people who had climbed the long slopes to worship, eventually evolving into a row of soba shops. From Fujikian, founded in the 10th year of Bunsei (1827), to long-established shops from the Meiji era that still remain today, over a dozen shops have continued to protect the authentic taste through friendly competition. Conclude your visit to Zenko-ji with a bowl of Monzen soba. It is the authentic taste of Shinshu soba, having walked alongside history.
